If You’ve Lived Here Long Enough, You Probably Know Tim Johnson

And if you don’t, well, he’s a good man to know.

Anyone who’s read Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory understands what a powerful motivator a coupon for free chocolate can be. But one need not read the book or travel to Switzerland or Belgium to witness that same candy-inspired youthful exuberance. That’s because Santa Barbara businessman Tim Johnson, a Goleta chocolatier, has been creating those Wonka-esque moments right here in town for more than 30 years. Together with his wife, Karen Kegg, Tim owns The Chocolate Gallery, renowned for its cutting-edge chocolate creations – as well as the free chocolate letters that have kept local schoolchildren reading studiously for more than two decades.

A Local Tradition

Tim & Karen

Tim & Karen love the Santa Barbara lifestyle & take great pride in being able to support various community programs for so many years.

If you grew up in the Santa Barbara area over the last 30 years, chances are at one point or another you’ve received a coupon for a free chocolate letter from The Chocolate Gallery. It started as a promotion with the Santa Barbara Library. When a young child read 15 books, he or she received a coupon to The Chocolate Gallery. Upon presenting the coupon, the child was able to choose his or her first initial in milk chocolate.

Today, many of the parents of children redeeming coupons fondly recall their own experiences of getting their chocolate letters, whether it was a reward from the library’s summer reading program, school jog-a-thon, or other event Tim and Karen sponsored. When they first opened the doors to The Chocolate Gallery, it was rare to find molded chocolate in shapes other than hearts and Easter bunnies. Tim and Karen “broke the mold,” built a thriving business. All these years later, Karen still runs the day-to-day operations of the store while Tim has moved on to a new professional challenge.

Thinking Outside the Box

Tim draws on 35 years of local knowledge regarding Santa Barbara area communities to help his clients make the most of their real estate opportunites.

Making chocolates and selling real estate might not seem to have much in common, but for Tim, the same ingenuity and attention to detail that sparked The Chocolate Gallery’s success are also at the root of his real estate service. Since 2004, Tim has earned his place among Santa Barbara’s premier real estate professionals. He takes great pride in his reputation for providing genuinely caring advice and insight to his clients. In fact, he views his clients as more than just another transaction. He takes an investment in their future and has been known to advise against a deal if he feels it’s not in their best long-term interests.

Tim took a circuitous route to real estate. Having earned his master’s degree in electrical engineering, he worked as a computer engineer early in his career prior to opening The Chocolate Gallery. In many ways, his engineering background still factors into how he does business. He’s extremely analytical and detail oriented, which ensures that his clients are in good hands when an investment as important as their home is at stake.

Breaking the Mold

When you work with Tim toward the sale or purchase of a home, you can’t help but sense his true passion for the Santa Barbara lifestyle as well as the in-depth local knowledge that accompanies it. He has a great sense of humor and strives to make the whole process fun and enjoyable while always keeping in mind the gravity of your investment. If you’re considering buying or selling a home in Santa Barbara, Goleta or anywhere throughout the area, don’t settle for an ordinary real estate agent.
